structural ceramics - thermal protection - armor
Commercially available state-of-the-art lightweight armor systems have traditionally been composite structures consisting of a hard (typically ceramic) front layer backed by a tough, fiber-resin layer. This basic design concept has been used for a number of decades with improvements coming from advancements in ceramic or fiber technology resulting in small improvements in ballistic performance. In order to meet the lightweight armor needs of US military, new innovative materials and design concepts are required.

ATC is developing a number of novel armor systems using Hotblox technology for the following applications:
  • Lightweight aircraft armor (Phase II SBIR Navair)
  • Lightweight structural armor
  • Missile container armor

Hotblox Armor is currently under development for these applications and also has applications in body armor, ballistics radomes, structural armor, and armored vehicles.
